When Youth Lose Direction, the Problem is More Than Just Jobs

For many young people today, graduation is no longer a gateway to independence, but the beginning of a harsh collision with a void. They send out dozens of applications without ever receiving a response, possess skills they don't know where to direct, and hold big ideas without knowing who to pitch them to. The issue of unemployment has shifted from a mere lack of jobs to a silent existential crisis: the loss of life direction. Prolonged unemployment slowly erodes hope. Amid social pressure and constant comparison with others' achievements, they get trapped in despair. Ultimately, losing a job is no longer just about an empty wallet, but the loss of daily structure, a sense of being needed, and human dignity.

The root cause of this crisis lies in unequal access to networks and the wide gap between education and the reality of work. The professional world is often driven by informal networks that are never written in job requirements. Young people from limited backgrounds must struggle alone without mentors or connections, while those with social access easily glide into various career opportunities. On the other hand, formal educational institutions fail to bridge theory with real practice. We teach accounting without ever introducing students to MSMEs struggling with bookkeeping, or teach design without training them to build portfolios for real clients. As a result, the abundance of information on the internet turns into new confusion due to the absence of an ecosystem that guides this potential.

Amid this deadlock, extraordinary potential is actually scattered all around us. Young people have energy, courage, and digital skills—ranging from coding and graphic design to digital marketing—which they learned independently. At the same time, local needs are very high: MSMEs need content creators, mosques require technology management, and local farmers need help with digital marketing. The problem is similar to poor food distribution; the supply of skills and the demand for daily needs coexist but remain isolated within a close radius. Furthermore, our local communities are filled with professionals, entrepreneurs, and experts who possess valuable knowledge but do not yet have a platform to share their experiences with the next generation.

BERGEMA intervenes in this deadlock by returning to the roots of society: the mosque. The mosque is viewed not only as a place of ritual worship, but as a social gravity center that brings together various layers of society. This is where BERGEMA's architecture works, positioning the mosque as a community hub for education, training, economy, and overall community strengthening. Our approach focuses on developing the whole person—not just spiritually, but also in terms of job competence, technology, leadership, and social contribution. Through mapping local needs, potential, and resources, BERGEMA connects young people with mentors, real projects, and opportunities that have long been severed by social walls.

BERGEMA's concrete solution begins by transforming the status of "unemployed" into a clear mapping of skills. We map the specific potential of each young person and connect them with real projects in their surrounding environment, such as designing MSME catalogs or managing community administration. Each project is directly supervised by local professional mentors who provide targeted feedback so they can build a valid portfolio. In addition, we are reforming the concept of volunteering. At BERGEMA, volunteers are not free labor, but trustees who receive protection, supervision, and structured capacity building. Through technology integration, these community hubs are interconnected to exchange business opportunities, training, and labor needs beyond local geographical boundaries.

The impact we aim for goes beyond mere employment numbers. We want to see a shift in the mindset of young people from passive job seekers to empowered individuals who confidently say, "I can do this." By having a real portfolio, a network of mentors, and recognized work experience, they will no longer walk in the dark without direction. Ultimately, this ecosystem will create a sustainable cycle of growth. Young people who come seeking help and guidance today will return to the mosque in a few years as mentors, entrepreneurs, or professionals opening doors for the next generation. We are not just preparing a workforce for industry; we are building generational resilience.
